Independent web design studio — Est. MMXVII

Websites built with intention, detail, and upward motion.

Excelsior is a small studio building type-led, performance-minded websites for businesses, founders, and institutions who notice the details — and want their visitors to, as well.

§ 01 — A note from the studio

A website is the most public room your business has. It speaks before you do; it sets expectations; it asks — or refuses to ask — for trust.

Excelsior exists because most websites are built like brochures and behave like junk mail. We work the other way around: every grid, every line of type, every pause and transition is a deliberate decision in service of a single thing — the moment a visitor decides you are worth their time.

We take a small number of projects each quarter. We start with conversation, not templates. And we believe a website is finished when nothing more can be removed.

§ 02 — Process

Four acts, in order.
From first call to a site that sings.

01 / Discovery
What is the page really for?
Who arrives, and what do they fear?
What single thing should they remember?
What is the voice — warm, exact, oblique?
What proof do we have, honestly?

Act One / Discovery First we listen, carefully.
Step 01 of 04
Act One

First we listen, carefully.

Before any pixel is committed, we sit with you and ask hard questions. Who arrives, what do they fear, what would success look like in twelve months. Discovery is unglamorous and indispensable; it’s where the rest of the project earns its precision.

  • — Stakeholder interview & brand audit
  • — Audience and proof inventory
  • — Written proposal with scope, milestones, fees
Act Two

Then we draw the bones.

Wireframes are not pretty pictures — they are arguments about hierarchy. We resolve information architecture, page logic, and content relationships in greyscale, where there is nothing to hide behind. Approval here saves a month later.

  • — Sitemap & flow diagrams
  • — Lo-fi page wireframes (desktop & mobile)
  • — Copy outline by section
Act Three

We compose in type and color.

Now the bones get a body. We commit to a typographic system, color, motion language, and tone of voice. You see real working pages on real devices — not flat mockups — with revisions paced through structured walkthroughs.

  • — High-fidelity working prototype
  • — Type, color, motion & component library
  • — Two scheduled rounds of feedback
Act Four

We ship — and stay.

Launch is not the end of attention. We hand off a hosted, monitored, accessible site, train your team on the CMS, and remain on call for the first quarter. A great website is a living thing; the studio looks after it.

  • — Production build & QA across browsers
  • — CMS handoff & team training
  • — 90 days of post-launch care
§ 03 — Disciplines

A site is many crafts, practiced together.

i.

Visual communication

Type, image, hierarchy, and pace. A site that says one thing, clearly, before it tries to say anything else.

ii.

Information architecture

Where things live and how visitors find them. Navigation that is invisible because it is simply correct.

iii.

Responsive design

More than half of visits arrive on a phone. We design mobile-first, then earn the desktop with composition.

iv.

Performance

Sub-second loads, hand-tuned assets, no bloated builders. Speed is a feature; we treat it like one.

v.

Accessibility

WCAG 2.2 AA as a floor, not a ceiling. Real keyboard flows, honest contrast, and language a screen reader can read aloud.

vi.

Stewardship

A site is a long conversation. Care plans, content edits, and quarterly check-ins keep it speaking clearly.

§ 04 — The studio

What we believe, plainly.

  1. 01

The most expensive part of a website is the part nobody noticed was missing.

  2. 02

A grid is not a cage; it is the instrument that lets the writing sing.

  3. 03

Animation should obey gravity, even when there is none.

  4. 04

If a page must explain itself, the page is not yet finished.

  5. 05

Speed is a courtesy. Treat your visitors’ time as you would your own.

  6. 06

The best websites are written first and designed second.

Ever upward.

A small number of projects open each quarter. If your business is ready for a website that earns the attention it asks for, we should talk.
